Main uses of coffee husk
- Creating coffee syrup. Starbucks for example, has uses coffee husk to make coffee syrup that is intended to enhance the natural flavor of coffee drinks. Coffee syrup or cascara (Spanish word) is made by soaking the coffee husk into water and combined with sugar. The blend is then boiled until it turns into glossy syrup.
- Organic fertilizer that is added to compost to generate high nutrient product for plant.
- Bedding for poultry and pets
- Making an edible mushroom that is high in nutritional value. Coffee husk cannot be used directly for food production, since it got high fiber content, caffeine and tannin as anti-nutritional compound. Fungi production that is combined with coffee bean husk helps the decomposition of anti-nutritional compound.
