Rice hull / rice husk contributes 20% of the rice weight, composed of silica (15-20%), cellulose (50%), lignin (25–30%), moisture (10-15%). Bulk density of rice husk is ranging from 90-150kg/m3. In the previous time, rice husk is utilized as an insulator for cold storage, wall and roof in China. Sometimes, it is also used as floor insulator.

Combustion process produces rice husk ash as the by product, which is rich in silica content. High silica content in rice husk is beneficial in agricultural sector for soil fertilizer and for additive in cement or steel manufacturing. In the cement manufacturing, the silica content of rice husk is extracted and converted to nanosilica. It is then included in the cement mixture to improve the properties of cement.
